SUNY Cobleskill Policies for International Exchange Students
There Are Two Ways To Come To SUNY Cobleskill:
- Training
Internships or practical training experiences that are required in a university program can be done at SUNY Cobleskill. Written authorization must be given by your university. Classes are also available for no credit; some classes may be recommended before or during the internship.
- Class Studies
One-semester or one-year certificate programs are available at SUNY Cobleskill. These certificate programs are currently offered in Plant Science and Emergency Medical Services. The programs carry SUNY Cobleskill credits; a certificate will be awarded upon completion of a program. The certificate and credits should be accepted by your university.

For Graduating High School and Transfer Students:
- Graduating High School and Transfer students who are interested in enrolling in a degree program at SUNY Cobleskill should check the website
Requirements For All Students:
- A TOEFL score of 500 (paper test) or 173 (computer test) is required for direct entrance into academic programs of study, training programs or certificate programs.
- For students scoring between 450 and 499 on the TOEFL examination, it is necessary to enroll in a one-month Summer Intensive ESL Program at SUNY Cobleskill first. Students who successfully complete the ESL program DO NOT need to take the TOEFL exam again.
- (F-1 Student Visa) High school students applying to SUNY Cobleskill as freshmen (first year students) must first complete high school and obtain a high school diploma (See further instructions)
- (J-1 Scholar Visa) Students must have authorization from their university
Security
- SUNY Cobleskill is a very safe campus in Central New York State, 40 minutes west of Albany and 4 hours north of New York City.
Housing
- Students will live in apartments that are very close to the campus. The apartments are furnished and appliances are available so students can cook. Each apartment has two bedrooms, a kitchen and a sitting room. If 4 students share an apartment (2 in each bedroom), the cost is appoximately $200(US) per student each month. If 2 students share an apartment (1 in each bedroom), the cost is appoximately $300(US) per student each month.
- Freshmen (first year students) must live on campus.
Food
- Students may prepare their own food in their apartments. If students shop and eat together, they will spend approximately $300(US) per month for food. Shopping is close by.
- Freshmen will purchase a meal plan on campus.
Transportation
- There is bus transportation from SUNY Cobleskill to Albany, the capital of New York State. Albany is 40 minutes away.
- Bus and train transportation to New York City, Boston and other cities are available from Albany.
- Taxi service from Cobleskill to Albany is available.
Health Insurance
- All international students will purchase international health insurance at SUNY Cobleskill. The cost is approximately $400(US) for one semester (fall or spring). There is a hospital in Cobleskill and health services are available at the college.
Climate/Clothing
- Information about what to bring to SUNY Cobleskill is available. Late spring, summer and early fall are mild; winters can be quite cold and snowy.
Approximate Costs
- Students in a training program at SUNY Cobleskill can expect to spend approximately $3,500(US) for one semester (4 months). This amount includes housing, food and other college fees (i.e., rent, food, health insurance, program fee and transportation). The Summer Intensive ESL Program is not included in this cost estimate.
- Students that attend courses without credit (except for English as a second language, which carries 3 credits during the fall or spring semesters) will spend approximately $5,500(US) for one semester. These students will receive a SUNY Cobleskill transcript for their ESL studies and a certificate of attendance for other courses attended.
- Students that enroll in a certificate program offering SUNY Cobleskill college credits will need to pay tuition for one semester. Please check out-of-state tuition cost. Students in this category will receive an official SUNY Cobleskill transcript showing grades for all registered courses plus a certificate of completion for the program in which they are enrolled.
