Residence Hall Network Connection Requirements

Your personal computer must meet the following requirements in order to be connected to SUNY Cobleskill’s campus network.  Although ITS can supply connection advice and assistance, it is the responsibility of the student requesting the residence hall network connection to meet these requirements.

1.   Your computer must have the necessary hardware requirements.

2.   Your network account and password must be activated.  Important Note:  You will not be able to activate your network account from your residence hall room.  Activation can be completed from any computer lab, library, or from your Residence Hall RA’s office.

3.   All computers are required to have a valid registered copy of an operating system (e.g., Windows 2000 or Windows XP Professional/Home Edition).  All registered students are entitled to an upgrade copy of Microsoft Windows XP Professional.

4.   If your computer uses a version of the Microsoft Windows operating system (XP, 2000), all of the critical Windows updates that are available from Microsoft must be installed.

5.   Anti-virus Software is mandatory for all users connecting to the campus network.

6.   Any non-academic activity that interferes with SUNY Cobleskill’s network and Internet service is prohibited, including but not limited to:  Peer-to-Peer (P2P) file-sharing; network gaming; network services such as web servers, FTP servers, etc.; network equipment attached to your port such as wireless access points and routers.  If you are now running any of the preceding hardware or software, you will be required to discontinue its use in order to complete Residence Hall Network Login and to comply with network regulations.  If you have questions about whether or not particular hardware or software is a problem, contact the Help Center.

7.   Use of the campus network in accordance with the Authorized Use of Campus Computing Resources Policy.
